Chillits has run since 1999, when a Bay Area community called Cloud Factory started an ambient music weekend on a retreat near Willits, the town its name puns on. It has wandered Northern California since and settled at Camp Winnarainbow on Wavy Gravy's Black Oak Ranch, a not-for-profit gathering capped at a few hundred people and staffed by the attendees themselves — a volunteer shift is the price of registering. SomaFM opened this channel in 2024 to play the recordings back through the rest of the year.

Almost every set since 2000 has been recorded, and that archive is the whole schedule: hour-plus mixes credited to the DJs who played them, most of whom do something else for a living, rather than a track rotation. Mixmaster Morris came in 2003 and mentioned the gathering on the BBC soon after; Robert Leiner, Safety Scissors, Wobbly and a Balinese gamelan ensemble have all turned up on the stage.
