Goa trance and psytrance for full-moon all-nighters.
Suburbs of Goa launched on SomaFM in 2008, eight years into a station Rusty Hodge began from a basement garage in Bernal Heights, itself the continuation of a micropower transmitter he ran at Burning Man in 1999. The channel is one of the network's more specific corners, and it survives because listeners fund it directly rather than because it can justify its audience to an advertiser — SomaFM has carried none since February 2000 and now runs past twenty channels on donations alone.
The programming is Goa trance and psytrance alongside desi-influenced world rhythms, rooted in the late-night beach parties in Goa that gave the genre its name. It is hypnotic and relentless by design, rewards patience over shuffling, and benefits considerably from volume — this is emphatically not a channel built to sit quietly somewhere in the background.
Turn it up or don't bother.
