Melbourne, Australia

PBS 106.7FM

Every announcer picks alone.

Soul, blues, reggae and metal, one obsessive each.

PBS was hatched in Melbourne in the mid-1970s by two music lovers, Felix Hoffman and Peter Jetson, who had each been trying separately to get a community station going and eventually found each other. By December 1976 they had fifty people in a room — doctors and dentists next to punks and musicians — all of them sick of a dial split between pop and classical. The Progressive Broadcasting Service went to air in 1979, and it is run by around four hundred volunteers out of Collingwood Yards.

More than eighty specialist programmes divide the week, and every announcer has complete say over what goes into their own hour. Got The Blues and Jumpin' The Blues take the blues, Babylon Burning and Riddim Yard the reggae, Screaming Symphony the metal, Dizzy Atmosphere and Ear of the Behearer the jazz, and a cluster from Android Discotheque to Synthesize Me the electronics.
