Broken beats, dub, and alternative from Hatfield.
The Grind started in 2013 as a playlist blog for alternative rock'n'roll and went live on 14 April 2014 from Aandklas, a bar in Hatfield, Pretoria. The grievance behind it was specific: too much talk on the city's radio, too little music, and too many opinions from presenters who were paid to have them. At one point it was the largest wholly online station in Pretoria, running at something like ten thousand listeners a month. It has followed the festival circuit since, from Oppikoppi to Mieliepop.
Each resident keeps a show and brings guests into it — Donny Basco's Rumbling Riddim, Bra Smoove's Smoove & Groove, Nicole's Lucky Packet Sessions, Professor Joosty's Skanking Selection, Psychedelicacy's Fusion, Shades of a Woman's Freq. In Motion. Drum and bass and electro run through most of the archive, hip hop and trap through much of the rest, and the submissions line is open to anyone.
