Dusting off the needle…
Reggae, soul and jazz from a Kingston DJ roster.
Primal is the work of Joel Moo-Young, a Jamaican DJ who built the station around the line printed under its logo — where it all starts. It runs out of Kingston as a DJ house rather than a playlist: some twenty-five selectors hold slots across the week, going live over the automation when their hour comes, and the roster runs from veteran sound men to the reggae singer Singing Melody, who keeps a weekly slot of his own. The remit is the Caribbean and everywhere its music has travelled since.
The grid is the point. Jah Links opens the weekday mornings with Rasta Vibration; DJ 77 runs Urban Honey into an hour of jazz called Linen & Lace; Doc Iman Blak hosts Metamophosis, Neiima brings poets in, Dr Dawkins answers questions on scripture, and the soul and dancehall shows carry the rest of the week to DJ Badbin's In Da Club, with reggae and gospel filling the automated hours between.
No two hours sound alike.
