Music discovery and NPR news from Santa Monica.
KCRW was set up in 1945 to teach servicemen coming home from the war the new business of FM, went on air properly in 1947, and has been a community service of Santa Monica College ever since — a training transmitter that grew into one of the most imitated music stations in America. It was a charter member of NPR in 1970, and it still runs the two halves together: network news and public affairs on one side, music discovery on the other, broadcast at 89.9 from the college's media centre.
Morning Becomes Eclectic has carried the music side since 1978 — three hours a day, and a lineage of hosts running from Tom Schnabel through Chris Douridas, Nic Harcourt and Jason Bentley to Anthony Valadez and Novena Carmel now. Bentley still takes Saturday nights for Metropolis, moving between house, techno, electronic pop and leftfield club records.
