Eclectic radio beamed from the desert to the world.
Black Rock FM joined SomaFM in 2010, and it closes a loop the network started with: Rusty Hodge first ran SomaFM as a micropower transmitter at Burning Man in 1999, a year before it became a full-time internet station broadcasting out of his basement garage in Bernal Heights. This channel is the prototype feed for 102.3 FM in Black Rock City, tested here all year round, and for one week every summer it becomes a real transmitter out on the playa rather than only a stream on the web.
The music is the ambient and downtempo end of that desert — Marconi Union, Tuu, Higher Intelligence Agency and Baby Mammoth, with Solid Doctor and Quad from the Pork Recordings side, and the occasional outlier such as Porcupine Tree. Eclectic is the stated brief and the rotation takes that seriously rather than using it as a hedge for anything.
Burning Man, minus the dust.
