Alt-rock, dance floors, and Portuguese bands on the rise.
Antena 3 was inaugurated on 26 April 1994 to fill a hole in Portuguese radio: a public station aimed at a young urban audience, built on alternative music and on getting new national artists heard before anyone else would play them. It has held that brief for three decades under the slogan A Alternativa Pop — indie, electronic, hip-hop and alternative rock, in whatever proportion the week demands — and it is the RTP channel that turns up at the country's festivals and broadcasts them live.
The week runs on specialists — Caixa de Ritmos at the dance end, Club Makumba for the global club stuff, Muitos Mundos for everything further out — with A3.30, the listener-voted chart, sitting on top. No Ar brings Portuguese artists into the studio to play live: Filipe Sambado, Ana Lua Caiano and Raquel Martins have all taken the session.
State-funded, scene-approved.
